Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Servings: 4

Cook Time: 25–30 minutes

Ingredients:

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80% lean works best)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef Mixture
    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Shape Patties
    • Divide mixture into 4 portions and shape into oval patties.
  3. Cook Patties
    • Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little oil.
    • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from pan and set aside.
  4. Make the Gravy
    • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft.
    • Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
    • Simmer until gravy thickens, about 3–5 minutes.
  5. Combine & Simmer
    • Return patties to the skillet and coat with gravy.
    • Simmer on low for 5–7 minutes to let flavors meld and patties cook through.
  6. Serve
    • Serve Salisbury steak hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles. Spoon extra gravy over the top.

  • Add mushrooms to the gravy for a hearty touch.
  • For lighter versions, use ground turkey or lean beef.
