🛒 Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 1 cup (225g) butter, softened
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

For the buttermilk sauce:

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp baking soda

1. Prepare the cake

  • Preheat oven to 170–175°C (340–350°F). Grease a baking pan.
  • Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each.
  • In another bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add dry ingredients to the batter alternately with buttermilk.
  • Stir in vanilla extract.

2. Bake

  • Pour batter into the pan.
  • Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

3. Make the sauce

  • In a saucepan, combine butter, sugar, and buttermilk.
  • Bring to a gentle boil, stirring constantly.
  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and baking soda (it will foam slightly—this is normal).

4. Assemble

  • While the cake is still warm, poke holes all over with a skewer.
  • Slowly pour the warm sauce over the cake, letting it soak in.

  • Let the cake sit for 15–20 minutes before serving so it absorbs the sauce.
  • Serve warm for the best flavor.
