Not necessarily—lines on your nails do not automatically mean you have cancer.
There are different kinds of nail lines, and most are harmless:
1. Vertical lines (very common)
- Run from cuticle to tip
- Usually just part of aging or mild dryness
- Nothing to worry about
2. Horizontal lines (Beau’s lines)
- Can appear after illness, stress, or injury
- Sometimes linked to conditions that temporarily slow nail growth
- Usually not serious on their own
3. White lines or spots
- Often due to minor trauma (like bumping your nail)
- Not from calcium deficiency, despite the myth
4. Dark vertical lines (need attention)
- A dark brown/black streak could rarely be linked to Melanoma under the nail
- Warning signs:
- Line is getting wider or darker
- Irregular edges
- Pigment spreading to surrounding skin
Bottom line
Most nail lines are completely harmless. But if you notice new, dark, or changing streaks, it’s smart to get them checked by a doctor.
