Posted on April 11, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic, comforting Shepherd’s Pie recipe—rich meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden.

🥧 Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

🧂 Ingredients

For the meat filling

  • 500–700 g ground lamb (traditional) or beef (often called cottage pie)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup peas (frozen is fine)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp thyme (optional)
  • 1 tbsp oil or butter

For mashed potato topping

  • 4–5 large potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk or cream
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: ½ cup grated cheese for topping

🍳 Instructions

1. Make mashed potatoes

  • Boil potatoes in salted water until soft (15–20 min)
  • Mash with butter, milk, and salt
  • Set aside

2. Cook the meat filling

  • Heat oil in a pan
  • Sauté onion and carrots for 5–7 minutes
  • Add garlic and cook 30 seconds
  • Add ground lamb/beef and brown well
  • Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme
  • Pour in broth and simmer 10–15 minutes until thickened
  • Add peas at the end

3. Assemble

  • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F)
  • Spread meat mixture in a baking dish
  • Top evenly with mashed potatoes
  • Use a fork to create texture on top (helps browning)

4. Bake

  • Bake for 20–25 minutes until top is golden
  • Optional: broil 2–3 minutes for extra crispiness

🍽️ Serving tips

  • Let it rest 5–10 minutes before serving
  • Great with a simple green salad or bread
