Shepherd’s pie

Posted on February 10, 2026 by Admin

Classic, cozy, and forever comforting 🥧
Here’s a traditional Shepherd’s Pie recipe—rich meat filling, savory gravy, and fluffy mashed potatoes baked golden on top.

Shepherd’s Pie

(Traditional version uses lamb; I’ll note the beef option too)

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • ¼ cup milk (or cream)
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Meat Filling

  • 1 lb ground lamb
(or ground beef → technically Cottage Pie)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh or dried thyme
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (15–20 minutes).
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  3. Set aside.

2. Prepare the Filling

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add onion and carrots; cook until softened (5–6 minutes).
  4. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  5. Add ground lamb and cook until browned; drain excess fat if needed.
  6. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  7. Pour in broth and simmer 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  8. Stir in peas, then remove from heat.

3. Assemble

  1. Spread meat mixture evenly in a baking dish.
  2. Spoon mashed potatoes over the top and spread gently.
  3. Use a fork to create ridges (helps browning).

4. Bake

  • Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until bubbling and lightly golden.
  • Optional: broil for 2–3 minutes for extra crispy peaks.

Tips & Variations

  • Cheesy topping: Mix shredded cheddar into the potatoes.
  • Extra depth: Add a splash of red wine to the meat before broth.
  • Creamier filling: Stir in 1 tbsp butter at the end.
  • Make ahead: Assemble, refrigerate, then bake when ready.

💡 Pro Tip: Let it rest 10 minutes after baking—this helps it slice beautifully.
