Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic

Posted on February 12, 2026 by Admin

Absolutely! Here’s a classic Southern-style Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic — savory, slightly sweet, and full of flavor.

🥓🥬 Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic

Servings: 4

Prep + Cook Time: 25–30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped or shredded
  • 4–5 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 1–2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or lemon juice (optional, for brightness)

Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Bacon

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped bacon and cook until crispy.
  3. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving bacon fat in the skillet.

2️⃣ Sauté Onion and Garlic

  1. Add sliced onion to the bacon fat and sauté 3–4 minutes until softened.
  2. Add garlic and cook 30–60 seconds until fragrant (don’t burn).

3️⃣ Cook the Cabbage

  1. Add chopped cabbage to the skillet.
  2. Stir to coat in bacon fat and mix with onions and garlic.
  3. Cook 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.

4️⃣ Season and Finish

  1. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
  2. Stir in cooked bacon.
  3. Optional: Add 1–2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or lemon juice for a bright finish.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Serve hot as a side dish for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
  • Pairs wonderfully with fried chicken, pork chops, or cornbread.

✅ Tips & Variations

  • Smoky flavor: Add a splash of smoked paprika or liquid smoke.
  • Extra veggies: Mix in shredded carrots or bell peppers for color and sweetness.
  • Healthier version: Use less bacon and add a drizzle of olive oil instead.
  • Crispy edges: Don’t overcrowd the pan — let cabbage get some browning for extra flavor.

If you want, I can also give a “one-pot shortcut version” where you cook bacon, onions, garlic, and cabbage all together for super easy cleanup.

Do you want me to do that?
