Hereβs how to tell if an avocado is safe β and good β to eat π₯
β 1. Check the Outside
Color
- Hass avocados (most common, like Hass avocado) turn dark green to nearly black when ripe.
- Bright green usually means underripe.
Skin texture
- Slightly bumpy = normal.
- Large dents, cracks, or mold = avoid.
β 2. Gently Squeeze (Donβt Poke)
- Firm + no give β Not ripe yet.
- Slightly soft with gentle pressure β Perfect.
- Very soft/mushy β Likely overripe.
- Sunken spots β Bruised inside.
Use the palm of your hand, not fingertips (to avoid bruising it).
πΏ 3. Check Under the Stem (Best Trick)
Pop off the small stem cap at the top:
- π’ Green underneath β Good to eat.
- π€ Brown underneath β Likely overripe.
- β« Black or moldy β Spoiled.
πͺ 4. After Cutting It Open
Itβs safe if:
- Flesh is green to yellow.
- Smells fresh and mild.
Itβs not good if:
- Large brown/black streaks throughout.
- Sour or rancid smell.
- Slimy texture.
- Visible mold.
Small brown spots are usually just bruising β you can cut those away.
β οΈ Food Safety Tip
If an avocado tastes bitter or smells off, donβt eat it β even if it looks okay.
