7 natural tips to get rid of midges in the kitchen

Posted on February 6, 2026 by Admin

Ugh, kitchen midges (fruit flies/gnats) are tiny but relentless 😤
Here are 7 natural, safe, actually-effective tips to get rid of them—and keep them from coming back.

🪰 7 Natural Tips to Get Rid of Midges in the Kitchen

1. Apple Cider Vinegar Trap (Classic for a Reason)

  • Fill a small bowl with apple cider vinegar
  • Add 1–2 drops of dish soap (breaks surface tension)
  • Cover loosely or leave open
They’re drawn in and can’t escape.

🍎 Pro tip: A drop of honey makes it even more tempting.

2. Remove Their Food Source

Midges breed fast—usually in:

  • Overripe fruit
  • Open trash
  • Dirty dishes
  • Compost bins

✔️ Store fruit in the fridge
✔️ Take trash out daily
✔️ Don’t leave dishes overnight

This is the most important step.

3. Boiling Water Down Drains

They often lay eggs in drains.

  • Pour boiling water down kitchen and sink drains once a day for 2–3 days
  • Follow with baking soda + vinegar if needed

🚫 Skip chemicals—heat works better here.

4. Essential Oil Repellent

Midges hate certain smells:

  • Peppermint
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lemongrass
  • Lavender

Mix:

  • 10 drops essential oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp rubbing alcohol

Spray near windows, trash cans, and counters.

5. Wine Trap (If You Have Leftover Wine)

  • Leave a small amount of red wine in a glass
  • Add a drop of dish soap
  • Leave overnight

They can’t resist it 🍷

6. Keep Surfaces Dry

Midges love moisture.

  • Wipe sinks dry at night
  • Fix dripping faucets
  • Empty sponge holders

Dry = hostile environment for them.

7. Cloves + Citrus Repellent

  • Stick whole cloves into a lemon or orange
  • Place on the counter

Smells great to us, terrible to midges 🍋🌿

🚫 What doesn’t really work

  • Open jars of vinegar without soap
  • Random sprays without removing breeding spots
  • Killing adults only (eggs = comeback)

🧠 The secret truth

You’ll see the biggest improvement when you combine traps + cleaning + drain care. Do all three for 48–72 hours and the swarm usually disappears.

If you want, tell me:

  • fruit flies vs tiny black gnats
  • sink or trash problem
  • apartment or house

I’ll tailor a laser-targeted plan so they’re gone for good 🪰✌️
