🥧 Shepherd’s Pie
A comforting classic made with seasoned meat, vegetables, and a creamy Mashed Potatoes topping baked until golden. Traditionally it uses Lamb, though many home versions use Ground Beef.
Ingredients
For the potato topping
- 2 lbs Potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 4 tbsp Butter
- ½ cup Milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the filling
- 1 lb ground lamb or beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup Carrots, diced
- 1 cup Frozen Peas
- 2 tbsp Tomato Paste
- 1 cup Beef Broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 tsp dried Thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
1️⃣ Make the Mashed Potatoes
- Boil potatoes in salted water for 15–20 minutes until tender.
- Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Set aside.
2️⃣ Cook the Filling
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the ground lamb or beef until browned.
- Add onion and garlic and cook 3–4 minutes.
- Stir in carrots, tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme.
- Simmer for 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Stir in peas.
3️⃣ Assemble
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
- Spoon the mashed potatoes over the top and spread evenly.
- Use a fork to create texture on the surface.
4️⃣ Bake
- Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and slightly crispy.
Serving
Serve hot with:
- green salad
- roasted vegetables
- crusty bread
