Shepherd’s pie

🥧 Shepherd’s Pie

A comforting classic made with seasoned meat, vegetables, and a creamy Mashed Potatoes topping baked until golden. Traditionally it uses Lamb, though many home versions use Ground Beef.


Ingredients

For the potato topping

  • 2 lbs Potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tbsp Butter
  • ½ cup Milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the filling

  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup Carrots, diced
  • 1 cup Frozen Peas
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 1 cup Beef Broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp dried Thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water for 15–20 minutes until tender.
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  3. Set aside.

2️⃣ Cook the Filling

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Cook the ground lamb or beef until browned.
  3. Add onion and garlic and cook 3–4 minutes.
  4. Stir in carrots, tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme.
  5. Simmer for 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Stir in peas.

3️⃣ Assemble

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
  • Spoon the mashed potatoes over the top and spread evenly.
  • Use a fork to create texture on the surface.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and slightly crispy.

Serving

Serve hot with:

  • green salad
  • roasted vegetables
  • crusty bread

✅ Tip: Sprinkle a little Cheddar Cheese on top of the potatoes before baking for an extra golden crust.
