Keto Shepherd’s Pie

Posted on February 4, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a delicious Keto Shepherd’s Pie recipe that’s low-carb, hearty, and perfect for dinner without the traditional mashed potato topping.

🥧 Keto Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or lamb
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup diced celery and/or carrots (use low-carb substitutes like turnips or zucchini for stricter keto)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter

For the “mashed potato” topping (cauliflower mash):

  • 1 medium head of cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (or cream cheese for extra richness)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cauliflower Mash

  1. Steam or boil the cauliflower florets until very tender (about 10–12 minutes).
  2. Drain and mash with butter, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and optional cheddar.
  3. Set aside.

2. Cook the Filling

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion and garlic until fragrant and soft.
  3. Add ground meat and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in mushrooms, celery/turnips, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Cook 5–7 minutes until vegetables are tender and mixture is well combined.

3. Assemble the Pie

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread the meat filling evenly in a baking dish.
  3. Spoon the cauliflower mash over the top, smoothing with a spatula.
  4. Optional: sprinkle extra cheese on top.

4. Bake

  • Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is slightly golden and edges bubble.

5. Serve

  • Let cool 5 minutes, then serve warm.

✅ Tips

  • For extra flavor, add a few dashes of smoked paprika or fresh parsley.
  • You can prep the filling ahead of time and store in the fridge; assemble and bake when ready.
  • Turnips, zucchini, or rutabaga work well if you want even lower carbs than cauliflower.

If you want, I can also give a “5-minute Keto Shepherd’s Pie hack” version using pre-cooked cauliflower mash and ground beef for ultra-fast meal prep.
