Here’s how I clean the oven rack: I use 1 plastic bag and it’s like new!

Ah, yes! That’s a classic “oven rack cleaning hack” — and it actually works surprisingly well. Here’s a safe, step-by-step way to do it:

Plastic Bag Oven Rack Cleaning Method

What You’ll Need

  • 1 large heavy-duty trash bag or large zipper storage bag
  • ½–1 cup ammonia (household, clear, not cleaners with fragrance)
  • Gloves for safety
  • Optional: old towel for surface protection

Instructions

  1. Remove the rack from the oven.
  2. Place the rack inside the bag. Make sure it fits comfortably.
  3. Pour ammonia into the bag — just enough to coat the rack (about ½–1 cup).
  4. Seal the bag tightly.
  5. Leave it overnight (8–12 hours) in a well-ventilated area. Ammonia fumes help loosen baked-on grease and grime.
  6. Open the bag carefully (ventilate to avoid strong fumes).
  7. Rinse and wipe the rack with warm water and soap. Most grime will come off easily.
  8. Dry thoroughly and return the rack to the oven.

Safety Tips

  • Always work in a ventilated area; ammonia fumes are strong.
  • Never mix ammonia with bleach — deadly toxic gases can form.
  • Use gloves to protect your hands.

Why This Works

Ammonia breaks down baked-on grease and grime, and sealing it in a bag traps the fumes right where they’re needed — your oven rack. By morning, it usually wipes clean with minimal scrubbing.

If you want, I can also give a natural, ammonia-free hack using baking soda and vinegar that’s safe and still super effective — perfect if you don’t want harsh chemicals.

Do you want me to do that?
