Here’s a classic, moist chocolate cake recipe that’s simple, rich, and perfect for any occasion 🍫🎂

Ingredients (Makes 8–10 servings)

For the Cake

  • 1 and 3/4 cups (220 g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water

For the Chocolate Frosting

  • 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup (65 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups (360 g) powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
  • Grease and flour two 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pans

2. Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt

3. Mix Wet Ingredients

  • In another bowl, beat together eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth

4. Combine Wet and Dry

  • Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, mixing until smooth
  • Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin—this makes it moist)

5. Bake

  • Pour batter evenly into prepared pans
  • Bake 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean
  • Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks

6. Make the Frosting

  1. Beat butter until creamy
  2. Add cocoa powder and powdered sugar alternately with milk
  3. Beat until smooth and fluffy
  4. Stir in vanilla

7. Assemble the Cake

  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate
  • Spread frosting evenly over the top
  • Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides
  • Optional: sprinkle with chocolate shavings or cocoa powder

Tips for Best Results

  • Use high-quality cocoa powder for richer flavor
  • For extra moistness, brush cake layers with a little coffee or milk before frosting
  • Store covered at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for 5–6 days
