  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt

Optional topping:

  • Whipped cream or chocolate shavings

1. Preheat oven

  • Preheat to 180°C / 350°F
  • Grease an 8-inch (20 cm) round cake pan

2. Make the custard

  • Whisk eggs and sugar together
  • Heat milk gently with cocoa powder until warm
  • Slowly pour milk into egg mixture, whisking constantly
  • Stir in vanilla, set aside

3. Make the cake batter

  • Whisk melted butter + sugar + eggs + vanilla until smooth
  • In a separate bowl, mix flour + cocoa + baking powder + salt
  • Gradually fold dry ingredients into wet mixture

4. Assemble

  • Pour cake batter into prepared pan
  • Carefully pour custard over the cake batter
  • Custard will sink slightly but bake together beautifully

5. Bake

  • Bake for 40–45 minutes
  • Cake is set when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean (custard may still jiggle slightly)

6. Cool & serve

  • Let cake cool to room temperature
  • Optional: chill in fridge for 1–2 hours for firmer custard
  • Serve with whipped cream or chocolate shavings
