Crockpot Split Pea Soup

Posted on March 30, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a simple and hearty Crockpot Split Pea Soup recipe that’s perfect for a cozy meal.

Ingredients (serves 6–8)

  • 2 cups dried split peas, rinsed and sorted
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1–2 smoked ham hocks or 1 cup diced ham (optional for flavor)
  • 6 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (optional)

Instructions

1. Prep Ingredients

  • Rinse split peas under cold water.
  • Chop all vegetables into small, uniform pieces.

2. Add to Crockpot

  • Place split peas, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, and ham (if using) in the crockpot.
  • Pour in broth.
  • Add thyme and bay leaf.

3. Cook

  • Cover and cook on LOW for 7–8 hours or HIGH for 4–5 hours, until peas are soft and soup is thickened.

4. Season and Blend (Optional)

  • Remove bay leaf and ham hock (if used).
  • For a smoother soup, use an immersion blender to puree slightly, leaving some texture.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.

5. Serve

  • Ladle hot soup into bowls.
  • Optional: drizzle a little olive oil on top or sprinkle with fresh parsley.
  • Serve with crusty bread or crackers.

💡 Tips for the Best Split Pea Soup

  1. Soaking peas: Not necessary, but soaking for a few hours can reduce cooking time.
  2. Add extra flavor: A splash of apple cider vinegar or a pinch of smoked paprika enhances taste.
  3. Vegetarian version: Skip ham and use vegetable broth; add smoked paprika or liquid smoke for depth.
  4. Storage: Soup thickens as it cools—add extra broth when reheating if needed.

If you want, I can also give a “Cheesy Ham & Split Pea Soup” variation that adds extra creaminess and flavor for a heartier meal.

Do you want me to share that version?
