🛒 Ingredients

  • 3–4 green (unripe) tomatoes
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 1 egg
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

  1. Slice the tomatoes
    • Cut into ¼-inch thick slices.
    • Lightly sprinkle with salt and let sit for 10 minutes (removes excess moisture).
  2. Prepare coating stations
    • Bowl 1: flour + a pinch of salt
    • Bowl 2: whisk egg + buttermilk
    • Bowl 3: cornmeal + pepper + paprika
  3. Coat the slices
    • Dip each slice in flour → then egg mixture → then cornmeal mix
    • Press lightly so coating sticks well
  4. Heat the oil
    • Heat about ½ inch oil in a skillet over medium heat
  5. Fry
    • Fry slices for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown
  6. Drain & serve
    • Place on paper towels
    • Serve hot
