Posted on March 11, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a comforting German-style sauerkraut with pork chops recipe—savory, tangy, and perfect for a hearty dinner. 🥩🥬

🇩🇪 German-Style Sauerkraut with Pork Chops

Ingredients

  • 4 bone-in pork chops
  • 2 cups Sauerkraut, drained slightly
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 apple, peeled and sliced (optional but traditional)
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • ½ cup chicken broth or water
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Brown the Pork Chops

  • Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Season pork chops with salt and pepper.
  • Sear for 3–4 minutes per side until nicely browned.
  • Remove and set aside.

2️⃣ Cook the Onion and Apple

  • In the same skillet, sauté the onion for about 3 minutes until soft.
  • Add the apple slices and cook another 2 minutes.

3️⃣ Add Sauerkraut

  • Stir in the sauerkraut, caraway seeds, and broth.
  • Mix everything together.

4️⃣ Simmer with Pork

  • Place the pork chops on top of the sauerkraut mixture.
  • Cover and simmer on low heat for 25–30 minutes, until pork is tender.

5️⃣ Serve

Serve hot with classic German sides like:

  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Spaetzle
  • Crusty bread

✅ Tip: A teaspoon of brown sugar or mustard can balance the sauerkraut’s tangy flavor if you prefer it slightly sweeter.

If you’d like, I can also share a one-pan oven version of German pork chops and sauerkraut that’s even easier (just bake everything together). 🍽️
