Ah yes—that’s one of those “lazy cleaning hacks” that actually works surprisingly well! This is a method for oven racks that’s quick, chemical-light, and avoids scrubbing. Here’s how to do it safely and effectively:

Oven Rack Cleaning in a Bag

What You’ll Need

  • Large trash bag or heavy-duty resealable bag (big enough to fit the oven rack)
  • 1 cup ammonia (optional for tough grime) or 1/2 cup baking soda for a natural method
  • Hot water
  • Gloves

Method 1: Ammonia (for really baked-on grime)

  1. Place the oven rack in a large trash bag.
  2. Add 1/4 cup ammonia into the bag with the rack.
  3. Seal the bag tightly.
  4. Let it sit overnight (or at least 12 hours) in a safe, ventilated area.
  5. Remove the rack—grime should wipe off easily with a cloth.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with water before putting it back in the oven.

Method 2: Baking Soda & Vinegar (chemical-free)

  1. Place the rack in a large trash bag or container.
  2. Sprinkle baking soda generously over the rack.
  3. Add hot water until the rack is submerged.
  4. Optionally, pour 1/2 cup vinegar to create a fizzing reaction.
  5. Let it soak for a few hours or overnight.
  6. Wipe off softened grime—no scrubbing required.

Tips

  • Always wear gloves—ammonia is strong and vinegar can irritate skin.
  • Do this in a well-ventilated area (outside is perfect).
  • If racks are extremely greasy, you may need a gentle wipe after soaking.

💡 Why it works: The soaking breaks down baked-on grease and carbon deposits, so you don’t have to scrub for hours.

If you want, I can make a “5 genius oven cleaning hacks” list—all take under 10 minutes prep, avoid scrubbing, and make your oven look brand new.
