Here’s a classic Patty Melt recipe — a grilled sandwich combining juicy beef, melted cheese, and caramelized onions on toasted bread. 🥪


🥩 Patty Melt – Grilled Sandwich

Ingredients (Serves 2)

  • ½ lb (225 g) Ground beef
  • 1 small Onion (thinly sliced)
  • 4 slices Rye bread (or your favorite bread)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar)
  • 2 tbsp Butter (softened)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Caramelize the onions

  1. Heat 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
  3. Cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and soft.
  4. Remove from skillet and set aside.

2️⃣ Cook the beef patties

  1. Divide ground beef into 2 equal portions and form thin patties.
  2. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. In the same skillet, cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until desired doneness.
  4. Remove from skillet and set aside.

3️⃣ Assemble the sandwich

  • Butter one side of each bread slice.
  • On the unbuttered side, layer: cheese → beef patty → caramelized onions → cheese → bread (buttered side out).

4️⃣ Grill the sandwich

  1. Heat skillet over medium heat.
  2. Place sandwich in skillet, cook 3–4 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese is melted.
  3. Press lightly with a spatula for even grilling.

  • Slice diagonally for classic presentation.
  • Serve with pickles, fries, or a side salad.
  • Optional: add a splash of Thousand Island dressing or mustard for extra flavor.
