Here’s an easy homemade pita bread recipe—soft, puffy, and perfect for sandwiches or dipping.


🥖 Homemade Pita Bread

🧾 Ingredients (makes 6–8 pitas)

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (100–110°F / 38–43°C)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

🍴 Instructions

1. Activate the yeast

  • In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast
  • Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy

2. Make the dough

  • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt
  • Add yeast mixture and olive oil
  • Mix until a dough forms

3. Knead

  • Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic

4. First rise

  • Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise 1–2 hours until doubled in size

5. Shape the pitas

  • Punch down dough and divide into 6–8 equal pieces
  • Roll each piece into a 6-inch circle

6. Preheat oven

  • Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C) with a baking stone or baking sheet inside

7. Bake

  • Place rolled dough on hot stone/sheet
  • Bake 3–5 minutes until puffed and lightly golden
  • Pitas should puff up—this creates the pocket

8. Cool

  • Remove and cover with a clean towel to keep soft
  • Repeat with remaining dough

💡 Tips

  • For extra soft pitas, brush lightly with olive oil after baking
  • Use immediately or store in an airtight container for a few days
  • Frozen pitas can be reheated in the oven or toaster
