For the patties:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (slurry for thickening)
  • Optional: sliced mushrooms

Instructions

  1. Make the patties:
    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix until combined and shape into 4–6 oval patties.
  2. Prepare the slow cooker:
    • Place sliced onions (and mushrooms if using) at the bottom of the slow cooker.
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Pour half over the onions.
  3. Add patties:
    • Place the patties on top of the onions. Pour the remaining broth mixture over the patties.
  4. Cook:
    • Cover and cook on low for 6–7 hours or high for 3–4 hours, until patties are cooked through and tender.
  5. Make gravy (optional extra thick):
    • About 30 minutes before serving, whisk cornstarch and water together to make a slurry.
    • Pour into the slow cooker and stir gently to thicken the gravy. Cook until desired thickness.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve the Salisbury steaks with gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
