🍤 Southern Fried Shrimp

🧾 Ingredients

  • 500 g raw shrimp (peeled & deveined, tails on or off)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

🔪 Instructions

1. Marinate the shrimp

  • Place shrimp in buttermilk
  • Let soak for 20–30 minutes (makes them tender and flavorful)

2. Prepare coating

In a bowl, mix:

  • Cornmeal
  • Flour
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Cayenne, salt, and pepper

3. Heat oil

  • Heat oil in a deep pan to 175–180°C (350°F)

4. Coat shrimp

  • Remove shrimp from buttermilk
  • Dredge in the seasoned cornmeal mixture
  • Press lightly so coating sticks well

5. Fry

  • Fry in batches for 2–3 minutes
  • Cook until golden brown and crispy

6. Drain

  • Remove and place on paper towels or a rack

  • Tartar sauce or spicy mayo
  • Coleslaw, fries, or hush puppies
