Here’s a classic method to cook a Standing Rib Roast — juicy, tender, and packed with flavor.

🥩 Standing Rib Roast (Prime Rib) Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 6–8)

  • 1 standing rib roast (3–5 ribs, about 4–6 lbs)
  • 2–3 tbsp olive oil or softened butter
  • 3–4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary or thyme (or a mix)

Optional for Gravy

  • Pan drippings
  • 1–2 cups beef broth
  • 1–2 tbsp flour

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Roast

  1. Remove the roast from the refrigerator 1–2 hours before cooking to bring it to room temperature.
  2. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  3. Pat roast dry with paper towels.

2️⃣ Season

  1. Mix olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper, and herbs to make a paste.
  2. Rub the mixture all over the roast, including the sides.

3️⃣ Roast at High Heat

  • Place roast on a rack in a roasting pan, fat side up.
  • Roast 15 minutes at 450°F (230°C) to create a flavorful crust.

4️⃣ Lower Oven Temperature

  • Reduce oven to 325°F (160°C).
  • Continue roasting until internal temperature reaches:
    • 120–125°F (49–52°C) for rare
    • 130–135°F (54–57°C) for medium-rare
    • 140–145°F (60–63°C) for medium
  • Tip: Use a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part, not touching bone.

5️⃣ Rest the Roast

  • Remove from oven, cover loosely with foil, and rest 20–30 minutes.
  • Resting allows juices to redistribute, keeping the meat juicy.

6️⃣ Optional Gravy

  1. Pour pan drippings into a saucepan and skim excess fat.
  2. Add 1–2 tbsp flour and cook 1–2 minutes.
  3. Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth.
  4. Simmer until thickened, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

7️⃣ Serve

  • Slice between the bones for perfect portions.
  • Serve with roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or your favorite sides.

✨ Tips

  • Prime Rib vs Rib Roast: Same cut; “prime rib” often refers to a high-quality standing rib roast.
  • Crust variation: Mix Dijon mustard with garlic and herbs for an extra flavorful crust.
  • Make ahead: Roast can be seasoned the night before for deeper flavor.

If you want, I can also give a “perfect medium-rare, super juicy” quick method for a standing rib roast that minimizes oven time while keeping it tender and flavorful.
